Creating housing, but also spaces that contribute to community life. Built for the Parallèle de l'habitation sociale, this building on Galt Street West brings together 116 housing units, the offices of the Sherbrooke Municipal Housing Bureau, and common areas intended for resident training and activities. A project that brings housing, services, and meeting places under one roof.

The challenge

The construction of the two levels of underground parking required significant excavation in close proximity to the street and at the bottom of a slope, where water accumulation was a constant reality. Above ground, another objective dictated the pace of the site: completing the building envelope and brick cladding of the six floors during the summer in order to carry out the parking and exterior landscaping before winter.

Our approach

Below street level, a retaining wall and continuously operating pumping wells kept the excavation dry and created the necessary conditions for concrete and formwork work. At the same time, the teams relied on their internal resources and shared equipment with subcontractors to reduce travel, facilitate interventions, and maintain the pace of exterior work.

Results

Coordinating the various sequences allowed for simultaneous progress on the deep excavation work and the building enclosure, in line with seasonal constraints. The result is a new living environment that adds 116 housing units to Sherbrooke while providing spaces for services, meetings, and occupant activities.
