Evolving spaces to match the pace of student life while respecting the building's history. The Mont Notre-Dame renovation aimed to create more welcoming dining, lounge, and reading areas tailored to student life, while bringing the facilities up to current standards. These spaces were designed to foster connection, collaboration, and the integration of new students into daily life.

The challenge

Working within an old building required navigating its unique characteristics while preserving its inherent character. Demolition work specifically required tailored measures to maintain high air quality. At the same time, the brick and wood walls, as well as the small-slat ceilings, had to be preserved or carefully replicated, despite the difficulty of sourcing certain original materials.

Our approach

Rather than systematically replacing what was already there, the teams sought to preserve and highlight existing elements wherever possible. Extensive research helped identify similar materials, and when they were no longer available, some pieces were custom-made by our foreman. Work methods were also adapted during demolition to protect the surrounding areas and maintain air quality.

Results

Today, Mont Notre-Dame retains the character that tells its story while offering spaces better suited to those who use them every day. The old and the new meet in an environment that is safer, more welcoming, and conducive to both social interaction and quiet downtime.
